Control how you Mac starts up with the keyboard.

Depending on which keys you press and hold on the keyboard, you can start up your Mac in different modes, from different boot drives or reset the PRAM.

The following key options can be used to start up macOS in different ways:

  • +R to boot into Recovery Mode

  • Alt (option) key to select startup disk (e.g. to boot from a USB macOS installer)

  • +Option+P+R to Reset PRAM (hold and wait the Mac to reboot and then release)

  • C to boot from the CD-ROM drive

  • D to boot into Apple Hardware Test

  • Shift to boot in Safe Mode
